Jamertal Lake

Highlight • Lake

The route runs near the clearing where the Juranda of Spychów castle used to be. And although the character of the knight is fictional, created by Henryk Sienkiewicz for the historical novel "The Teutonic Knights", the castle did exist. It was built in 1959 as part of the scenes shot for the film that took place among the picturesque landscapes of Kociewie. The wooden Juranda Castle was built on the lake called Jamertal. The place of existence of the object is still on many tourist maps, hence the idea to get to know it. Currently, there are no traces of the building, but it is worth going to the intimate lake and a bit of a break from civilization.

St. Mary's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Its construction began after the knights of the Teutonic Order settled on the left bank of the Wierzyca, which they acquired from the Święce family in 1305. They immediately began to fortify the settlement and build a Gothic temple with a basilica-style architectural layout within the defensive walls.

The monument commemorates the entry of Polish soldiers to the Market Square in Starogard on January 29, 1920 and, under the Treaty of Versailles, the return of the city and the county to Poland after 148 years of the annexation of Gdańsk Pomerania. Celebrations related to this event have been held at the monument since the 1990s. During the communist period there was never any celebration on this occasion.

Starogard Gdański Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

The market square in Starogard Gdański is the oldest part of the city. In the Middle Ages, on the left bank of the Wierzyca River, there was a farm and a village that belonged to Piotr Święca. After selling them to the Teutonic Knights, around 1305, they began to mark out the area for the development of a fortified settlement. At that time, the construction works were supervised by Theodotus from Florence, to whom Starogard owes its spatial shape with a regular network of streets radiating from the centrally located market square, whose square of 107 m × 107 m is larger than the Old Town Square in Warsaw. Without a doubt, the Teutonic Order contributed to the economic development of the town.
