The village was first mentioned in 1412 as Wartena. Warten was originally a Terp village (artificial residential hill) in the early Middle Ages. It later developed into a canal village. The Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1780 to replace the medieval church. The tower was restored in 1880. The Oud Friese Greidboerderij is an old Frisian longhouse farm built on a terp around 1728. It is one of the few remaining farms that is still in its original condition.

The De Ikkers polder mill dates back to the 18th century. In 1921 it was purchased and moved to Snikzwaag to remove excess water from the Broeksterpolder. In 1970 it was bought back and relocated and restored, but is not in use.

In 1840 Warten was home to 461 people. Until 2014 Warten was part of the municipality of Boarnsterhim and until 1984 it belonged to Idaarderadeel. Text: Wikipedia

De Alde Feanen National Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

De Aldefeanen Nature Reserve is an absolute natural highlight. I don't know much about it, but there are many special birds within the nature reserve that even a layman can notice and enjoy :)

A long cycle path that runs right through National Park De Alde Feanen. This beautiful nature reserve offers extensive meadows, narrow ditches and a rich variety of birds and aquatic plants along the way. 'Lange Sleatten' is perfect for a relaxing cycle through the Frisian landscape, with plenty of opportunities to experience the unique nature of De Alde Feanen.

Romsicht Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

On the edge of the Alde Feanen and the Jan Durkspolder there is a thirteen-metre-high observation tower. From the highest point you have a wide view of the bird species that breed, rest and forage here.

The tower was built on the foundations of an old farm called Romsicht, which was demolished in 1967. The thatched roof is covered with reeds that come from the polder. A wide variety of birds live here.

Very beautiful nature.
