Ditzum Windmill

Highlight • Monument

Nice gallery Dutchman in the middle of Ditzum, which is not easy to photograph optimally because of the narrow streets. It is worth climbing the mill when it is open. The view of the place from here is wonderful. So be sure to go to the gallery, if it is open. On the ground floor there is all sorts of things to be found in the local country women’s browsing room.
The first mill in ditzum was built in 1769, but burned down in a devastating village fire in 1882. A year later the new mill was up again. But luck didn’t last forever here either: a fire during World War II damaged the good piece considerably. A makeshift repair after the end of the war was not very convincing.
It is thanks to the village renewal program of the state of Lower Saxony in the 1990s that the municipality of Jemgum acquired the privately owned mill and, with the help of the mill association founded in 1998, built the mill as it can be seen today on the existing masonry. The resourceful Ditzumers obtained the knowledge from a broken mill in Dithmarschen. The gallery, mill cap and the wings, on the other hand, had to be rebuilt. Since then, the monument has been functional again with one grinding process and can be viewed.

Harbour "Ditzum"

The small fishing village of Ditzum is popular with cyclists. Whether on the return trip from Rheiderland or the Dollart route from Holland. Ditzum always invites you to take a break, whether it's fish rolls, coffee and cake, ice cream or a delicious fish dish - here you can recharge your batteries.

The Little Café Ditzum

Highlight • Cafe

Very nice little café on Kirchstrasse 9 in Ditzum. Very nice interior and there is also a small terrace. Cakes, tarts, waffles and ice cream are available here. Coffee and other hot drinks and of course cold drinks too.

Ditzum church and bell tower

Highlight • Religious Site

The beautiful and old church from the 12th century with a hexagonal tower, together with the harbor and the mill, has a decisive influence on the face of the tranquil harbor town at the foot of the Dollart. A visit is not only worthwhile from the outside, but also from the inside.

Sheep on the Dike

Highlight • Natural

Attention dog owners! Dogs are not allowed on the dyke, even on a leash. Understandable, but I didn't know that beforehand and it threw our hike into disarray.

Rheider Deich near Ditzumerhamrich

Highlight • Viewpoint

The dike is, in the sense of the word, the highlight of every hike near Ditzum. Here the wide landscape enchants with a grandiose cloud cinema in the sky.
