De Schicht Monument

De Schicht is a striking monument on Texel, commemorating the island’s strengthened dikes following the devastating 1953 flood disaster. This disaster flooded Polder De Eendracht and claimed the lives of six men from Texel. In response, between 1961 and 1981, all dikes on the island were raised to "delta height" to prevent future flooding.

Located east of De Cocksdorp along the Wadden Sea dike, De Schicht’s steel structure mirrors the shape of Texel’s east coast and symbolizes the robust, reinforced dikes. Designed by local artist Harry Tielemans, it stands as a reminder of Texel’s resilience and the ongoing efforts to protect the island from the sea.
