Minderbroeders Church, Venlo

Highlight • Religious Site

This is not a chapel but a church.
The Minderbroederskerk is a single-bay, three-sided, enclosed Gothic-style church building in the center of Venlo, built in 1617.

Church with a wing of the former monastery
On May 15, 1612, the first Friars Minor came to Venlo, where they temporarily settled in the old Sint-Jacobsgasthuis. The construction of our own accommodation on the site of the Hertogshof or Prinsenhof began in 1614. The construction was made possible through financial support from the city and a donation from Archduke Albert and Duchess Isabella, who also gave away part of the garden that belonged to their house (de Loohof). The monastery building was completed in 1616 and the church that belonged to the monastery in 1620.

In 1797 the Friars Minor had to leave their monastery, forced by the violence of the French Revolution. The former monastery then served as barracks for the city's cavalry. After 1913, the former monastery of the Friars Minor was demolished. Only the church was preserved and restored in the 1930s. The church then suffered severe damage due to the violence of the Second World War, whereupon it was decided in 1950 to restore the church.

Today the building is home to the Youth Church and is on the list of national monuments.

Stone Sculpture at Venlo Station

Highlight • Monument

In 2010, extensive excavations were completed as part of the route investigation of the Maasboulevard. The excavation work had lasted two and a half years. Since then, it has been assumed that the site was a 2000-year-old Roman logistics site, which was founded around 19 BC. BC and is said to be about the same age as Nijmegen.
