Neustift Abbey Winery

Highlight • Historical Site

The monastery winery in Neustift, founded in 1142, is one of the oldest active wineries in the world and one of the most important in the Eisack Valley. It is particularly known for its white wines, which account for around 70 percent of production. The main varieties include Sylvaner, Müller Thurgau, Kerner, and Riesling, which thrive in the vineyards of the Brixen valley basin at altitudes of up to 900 meters.

The monastery winery places great emphasis on sustainable vineyard management and operates in a CO2-neutral manner. In addition to white wines, the winery also produces red wines. These grapes come from Bolzano and Cornaiano, as the climate in Brixen would be too harsh for red varieties. The winery's most famous wine line is the Praepositus series, named after the abbot of the monastery, as a tribute to the winery's leader.

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tours: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 p.m. (from late April to mid-October). Saturdays at 10 a.m. (year-round); reservations are required.

Bressanone Cathedral (Duomo di Bressanone)

Highlight • Religious Site

Brixen Cathedral and the cloister
All roads lead to the cathedral square of Brixen, the heart of the city. The cathedral is one of the most important sacred buildings along the Alps and is one of the most famous sights in Brixen. Its origins go back to the 10th century AD. The last major renovation took place in the 18th century. The building was completed in the baroque style with a classical vestibule.
The cloister is part of the cathedral district and is vaulted with a Gothic cross vault. The frescoes date from the 14th and 15th centuries and document the development of art in the Middle Ages.
