Is Arutas

Highlight • Beach

Is Arutas is one of the most characteristic beaches in Sardinia because the sand is made up of fine and rounded grains of quartz that look like grains of rice. Often battered by strong winds, be careful when swimming also because the sea immediately becomes deep.

Tharros Archaeological Site

Highlight • Historical Site

The archaeological area of Tharros is one of the most significant testimonies of the ancient history of Sardinia. Among the necropolises and Nuragic, Phoenician and Punic remains, the tower of San Giovanni also stands out, a Sardinian coastal tower built between the 16th and 17th centuries to protect against the incursions of Barbary pirates and corsairs.

St. John's Tower

Highlight • Monument

The tower of San Giovanni, so named because it is close to the church of San Giovanni di Sinis, was built between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century on the top of the hill (50 meters above sea level) overlooking the archaeological area by Tharros.

S'Ena Arrubia Pond

Highlight • Lake

The marshy territory between Oristano and Arborea, in the 1930s, was subjected to reclamation by Fascism, which at the same time founded the city of Arborea.
What today remains of the ancient large lagoon of Sassu is precisely the pond of S'Ena Arrubia, which was saved from drying up and represents the non-reclaimed part of the area.
S'Ena Arrubia, classified as a Wildlife Protection Oasis, Site of Community Interest and declared a Wetland protected by the Ramsar Convention in 1977, is not fed by natural waterways, but collects drainage waters that mix with brackish ones of the sea. It is shallow (from 40 cm to 150 cm approximately), but rich in biodiversity, due to the presence of fauna and flora species of high interest. A fishermen's cooperative is authorized by the Regional Government to fish certain qualities and quantities of fish.
The uncontaminated landscape, bordered by the sea and pine groves, is wonderful especially at sunset, with its iridescent waters, dunes, vegetation, herons and marsh birds in flight or perched on the water.
There is no shortage of campsites, B & Bs, hotels and restaurants in the surrounding area, as well as in Arborea (6 km away).
