Pyramids of Passo dell'Abetone

Highlight • Monument

The territory of Abetone has always been a crossing point of the Apennines, so much so that it is said to have also been used by Hannibal to enter Etruria. The construction of the road dates back to 1766 to unite the Grand Duchy of Tuscany with the Duchy of Modena. During construction, a fir tree was demolished so large that it could not be embraced even by six people and from which the name Abetone was born.

Verginetta Pass

Highlight • Viewpoint

A meadow opens up on the edge of the woods of Monte Maiori. This place takes the name of Verginetta probably from a small votive shrine present there.
Nearby there is also the refuge La Casetta di Lapo.
It sure is a great place to have a picnic!

La Verginetta

Highlight • Viewpoint

At 1,480 meters above sea level, right on the edge of the woods of Mount Maiore, there is a large meadow known as La Verginetta, probably so called due to the presence of a small chapel nearby. Here you will also find the La Casetta di Lapo refuge, making it a great place to take a break.

The trail in this section, from Abetone to Libro Aperto, follows the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, taking you back and forth between these two regions. The terrain is ideal for running.
