Vineyard Entre-Deux-Monts

Highlight • Structure

For three generations, the Bacquaerts have been cultivating wine on eighteen hectares between the two mountains (French: "Entre-Deux-Monts") of Rodeberg and Zwarteberg, making them one of the northernmost wineries in Europe.
The climate here isn't as gentle as that of the Moselle or Saar—but the Bacquaerts see this as a challenge and cultivate Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, Pinot Noir, Acolon, Kerner, and Siegerrebe. The exceptional soil, with its iron ore and south-sloping soil, is well exposed to the sun, thus aiding grape ripening.

Take the time to visit and learn all about the winery's history and winemaking on a guided tour. After a stroll through the vineyard, you'll visit the vinification room and the wooden barrel cellar. In the tasting room, with its magnificent view of the vineyards, you can sample wines and learn the art of winemaking, including pruning, harvesting, and pressing.

Nine Elms British Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

The name of this cemetery, "Nine Elms British Cemetery," comes from the Flemish word elm. An elm is a lep (tree).

A small wood of elms lay in the vicinity of this cemetery. Throughout the war, this location was in no man's land.

The cemetery was established and used by the 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations when they were transferred from Brandhoek and Lijssenthoek, respectively, to Poperinge in September 1917. Almost all the graves in plots I through IX originate from this Casualty Clearing Station, when it operated in this area during the Battle of Ypres, until December 1917. The other plots, X through XV, date from the period of the German Spring Offensive—early March 1918 to October 12. This cemetery also contains the graves of 37 German soldiers from World War I and 22 WWII graves dating from the Allied retreat to Dunkirk in 1940.
