Description
If you're looking for an easy, educational outing that packs a punch in terms of scenery and ancient history, the Hiking loop from Fossil Exhibit Trail parking is an excellent choice. This easy hiking route covers 4.2 miles (6.8 km) with a gentle 104 feet (32 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 1 hour and 44 minutes to complete. It's perfect for families, those with limited mobility, or anyone wanting a quick, high-reward experience in Badlands National Park.
What to expect on Hiking loop from Fossil Exhibit Trail parking
The route itself is largely a flat, well-maintained boardwalk, making it incredibly accessible for almost everyone. As you follow the loop, you'll be surrounded by the Badlands' distinctive rock formations, offering stunning views of spiky pinnacles and colorful rock layers. The real highlight, however, is the 'open-air museum' experience, with numerous interpretive signs and fossil replicas detailing the ancient animals that once roamed here. While the main trail is easy, if you venture off-boardwalk into the surrounding formations, sturdy shoes are a must. It's an ideal introduction to the park's rich past without requiring a strenuous effort.
Planning your visit
The trailhead is conveniently located right off Highway 240, about five miles west of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, making it an easy stop. Parking is available directly at the Fossil Exhibit Trail parking area. Keep in mind that the trail is largely exposed with little to no shade, so plan accordingly with water and sun protection, especially during warmer months.
