Talybont Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

The largest reservoir in the Brecons, Talybont reservoir was completed in 1939. It supplies water to Newport, further south.

Seventeen dwellings (including farms) were co-opted during its construction.

Despite its man-made nature, it's a very pleasant place to spend some time.

Brinore Tramroad

Highlight • Trail

Running for 8 miles (13 km) from Talybont-on-Usk to Trefil, the Brinore Tramroad was operational as a horse-drawn railway between 1815 and 1865. An important industrial artery, it linked the Tredegar iron works and the Trefil limestone quarries to the Monmouth & Brecon Canal.

Today, it is a popular hiking route, with splendid views of Talybont Reservoir’s serene expanse and the emerald sweep of the Central Beacons. The Usk Valley Walk, a long-distance hike that follows the Usk River between Caerleon and Brecon, makes use of the stretch above the reservoir.

White Hart Bridge (Bridge 143)

Highlight • Bridge

Bridge 143 on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canals is known as the White Hart Bridge. It is behind the White Hart pub in Talybont on Usk. The canal, dating back to the early 1800s, was constructed mainly to transport coal and iron from the local mines and quarries along the canal to Newport. Tramways also linked with the canal and brought limestone to the kilns in Brecon, Llangattock, and Goytre.

Talybont is perfectly situated for trail running adventures. This charming village has everything you need for a base, including a trio of excellent pubs, a lovely cafe, a village shop and a restaurant. We love Talybont so much, the nearby Gilestone Farm became the home of our 2021 Trail Pursuit Festival in the Brecon Beacons.

There's everything from forest tracks, reservoir loops and modest hills within easy striking distance. The Central Beacons massif, including the iconic Pen y Fan, is also only a short distance away for more epic outings. If you fancy a less strenuous jog, the historic Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal runs through the village.

In lee of the Central Beacons' eastern arms, the village of Talybont is a superb base for hikers. With plenty of woodland, reservoir and hill walks right on its doorstep, you're spoilt for choice. In the village are several good accommodation options and plenty of places to eat and drink.

It's possible to hike to Pen y Fan's 2,907-foot (886 m) summit from the village, though any circular route is a very long day on the hill. Of interest closer by is Talybont Reservoir, a treat for bird enthusiasts; Tor y Foel, a charming standalone summit at 1,808 feet (551 m); and Bryn, a north eastern outlier of the Central Beacons at 1,844 feet (561 m).
