Kössern Hunting Lodge

Highlight • Castle

The hunting lodge, built in the style of a large manor house around 1709 - often referred to as a hunting lodge - is considered an outstanding gem of baroque architecture in the Mulde valley. The architect was Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, chief court huntsman and elder minister in the cabinet of the Saxon Elector Friedrich August I and later King of Poland August II - known as "August the Strong".

The high mansard roof greets visitors from afar. The tightly structured, richly painted facade is in perfect harmony. The foyer on the ground floor was supported on both sides by four strong pillars to allow a view of the Great Garden. An extensive staircase, preserved in its original form, leads to the upper floor with a surprisingly stately ballroom, which is crowned with lavish stucco and a large ceiling painting.
Today, guided tours in historical costumes, concerts, events and rooms for weddings are offered. In addition, a tourist information point (outpost of the Grimma city information office) awaits you in the Kössern hunting lodge, which is located directly on the Mulde cycle path.

Höfgen Water Mill

Highlight • Monument

In the water mill, which is around 300 years old, there is a technical display system in which you can relive the life of 200 years ago. In addition to information about the milling operation, two lovingly furnished rooms are also exhibited as part of a miller's apartment at the time.

You can stop off in the inn next to the old mill with the mill wheel still in place.

You can find out more about the opening times of the watermill and the inn here: wassermuehle-hoefgen.de

Höfgen Ship Mill Museum

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

The hike from Grimma to the ship mill on the Mulde is scenic. Those who cannot walk the approximately three kilometers can also park directly at the ship mill. A trip by ship to the ship mill is also recommended. There are plenty of opportunities to have a nice day there.

A very nice hiking trail along the Mulde. The Rabenstein crowns it with a beautiful view of the landscape. The “Way of the Stones” also leads along here with 26 stations, including stone signposts, seat stones, standing boards and sculptures.

A suspension bridge leads to Grimma via the hollow. If you follow the hiking trail from Rabenstein towards Höfgen, you will pass a historic ship mill and you can have the ferryman put you back across the trough in Höfgen and reach the Nimbschen monastery (known by Katharina von Bora, the Lutherin).

Grimma Suspension Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The suspension bridge spans the river Mulde and thus connects the urban area of Grimma with the city park, whose paths lead further into the monastery and mill valley.

After a flood destroyed the first wooden barrel bridge, the suspension bridge was built in 1924.

In 1945 it was blown up and restored in 1949. During the devastating flood in 2002, the structure was severely damaged.

Today it has been completely restored and delights visitors as Saxony's longest rope suspension bridge with a span of 80 metres.
