Footbridge Over the River Brede

Highlight • River

A nice quick easy walk, there is a recreation ground to park in or the pub. It does have a steep decline near the beginning and, of course, there is the up at the end plus one more up and down before the first railway crossing. Always see swans on the river but not seen any signets this year. Only saw a couple of other walkers but that is not unusual on this walk. Some of it is on the 1066 walk.

The Watcher Sculpture on the 1066 Country Walk

Highlight • Historical Site

The Watcher is one of the evocative sculptures along the long-distance 1066 Country Walk route. This sentry is beautifully carved from wood and watches for the invading army. He stands by Wickham Manor Farm.

Strand Gate and Lookout View of Rye Bay

Highlight • Monument

This gate is one of the three that once existed in the town. Built in the late 13th century, it provided access to the port.
This gate appears in Thackeray's novel "Denis Duval," which also helps to provide an idea of what life in the village was like in the late 18th century. It is a Grade I listed monument.
In the distance you can spot Camber Castle.

St Thomas the Martyr Church, Winchelsea

Highlight • Religious Site

Now partly in ruins, the 13th century St Thomas the Martyr Church is dedicated to Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury. The church was built when the whole village of Winchelsea was moved inland and uphill after flooding decimated the port of the same name. There are differing accounts as to whether the building was ever finished or if it was partly destroyed in an attack by the French. It is worth looking inside at the intricate masonry, medieval tombs and early 20th century stained glass window.

Pipewell Gate (Ferry Gate)

Highlight • Monument

Pipewell Gate gave access to the ferry and later to the road which led from Winchelsea to Rye.

Its alternative name is Ferry Gate. It is newer than the others. Destroyed in the French attack in 1380, it was rebuilt in 1404 by John Helde the Mayor. The remains of his shield can be seen on the ferry side of the gate.

Remains of St. Leonard's Windmill

Highlight • Viewpoint

This viewpoint is located right where the St. Leonard's Windmill used to stand. In fact, you can see some of its ruins. This windmill was built in the early 18th century but was destroyed in the October hurricane of 1987.

July 27, 2022,A beautiful hike and 3 long Covid records in a day!

By far the longest walk I have done since I got ill 18 months ago. Beautiful and varied scenery too. The small town of Winchelsea is fascinating and beautiful.
