The wooden bridge in Baden

The covered wooden bridge is a very special gem of Baden and crosses the Limmat at its narrowest point, the Klus, between Schlossberg and Lägern. The two banks of the Limmat were first connected by a bridge at the Enge in the 13th century. The current wooden bridge has at least five predecessors, but all of them were destroyed over the centuries by floods, ice flows or acts of war. Until the high bridge was built, the narrow wooden bridge and the narrow slag heap served as the main traffic route. The design for the structure, which was built in 1809, was by the Laufenburg master builder Blasius Balteschwiler. He designed a beam structure that spans the 37-meter-wide river without pillars; the bridge itself is 39 meters long. After a year of construction, the bridge was opened in 1810.
