Königstein castle ruins

Königstein Castle was probably built in the 11th century and served to secure the important imperial road between Frankfurt and Cologne. At the end of the 18th century, the castle was destroyed by the French and has been a ruin ever since. The imposing castle is one of the largest fortifications in Germany. From here you have a fantastic view over the Rhine-Main plain and into the Taunus forests.

The castle is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer months. From November to the end of March, the ruin is only open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is three euros. A large jousting tournament takes place at the castle every year on Ascension Day.
