St. Antonius Church

The Sankt Antonius Church in Papenburg, with its historic town hall opposite and the historic ship in between, is the central place in the city, which is divided into “lower end” and “upper end” and which is followed by the pedestrian zone to the west. Built on moorland, the impressive neo-Gothic building was consecrated in December 1877, after the previous church, built in 1682, had become too small and before it was demolished on the diagonally opposite side in 1878. The church is named after Saint Anthony of Padua. Since 1966, federal highway 70 has passed right by it on the north-south axis.
It is not only worth taking a tour around the 70 meter long and 35 meter wide church, but also a visit to the beautiful interior is recommended. In addition to a free-standing high altar, numerous frescoes and wall paintings are definitely worth a tour. The view of the central baptismal font and the central and soap ships has its own charm. Since 2020, the Walcker organ with its monumental pipe towers under the church tower and the console in the side choir has completed the church in an acoustically overwhelming way. Papenburg is Germany's oldest and longest Fehn colony. Canals shape the cityscape in Papenburg at the Oben- and Untenende and were long the main development axes. The network of canals extends from the harbor on the Ems to the Küstenkanal in the southeast with a total length of approx. 40 km and a longitudinal extent of approx. 14 km.

Originally, the canals were created to drain the moor in order to be able to extract peat and make it usable or saleable as fuel. Soon, the canals were discovered as efficient transport routes, which led to the establishment of dozens of wooden shipyards that built barges.
