Fangelturm, Neubrandenburg

Highlight • Historical Site

Dating back to the 15th century, the Fangelturm (Fangel Tower) was built as a defensive tower on the city wall. Originally, the tower entrance was 6 meters high and could only be reached by ladder. The current entrance and the passageway next to the tower were only created in the 19th century. The tower roof and battlements were also reconstructed in the 19th century.
The Fangelturm, including the stone spire, is 25 meters high and has a diameter of 6.5 meters. In a dome-like vault behind the former entrance, 6 meters high, is a round opening, the so-called "Fear Hole." Below this was the prisoners' dungeon, the floor of which is about 2 meters below today's street level. Through the fear hole, the convicts could be lowered down and provided with essentials.

The St. Johannis Church has been the main church of the parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg in Neubrandenburg since 1945. It was built in the 14th century as a monastery church of the Franciscan monastery in Neubrandenburg.

Treptower Gate, Neubrandenburg

Highlight • Monument

On the west side of the city fortifications, the Treptower Tor in Neubrandenburg announces the former pride and wealth of the citizens. This wide, late-Gothic gate (around 1400) with its four stepped gables and rich panel structure is the highest and at the same time the most representative of all city gates. The main gate reaches a height of almost 32 m.

As early as 1872 it was expanded to become one of the first municipal museums in Mecklenburg. Today a museum on the prehistory and early history of the region is housed in the gate. The four-wheel mill, first mentioned in 1271, was included in the ensemble of the gate system as an outwork.

Originally, 57 Wiekhäuser were embedded in Neubrandenburg's ramparts at intervals of approx. 30 meters, in so-called Wieken and originally served to defend the city in the Middle Ages, as the wall had no battlements. With the advent of firearms, they lost their function and were converted into dwellings. In the northern section of the ramparts, in the area of the 1st ring road, two Wiek towers were reconstructed in their original form as defensive towers.

Klöterpottsweg

Highlight • Trail

The Klöterpottsweg connects Neubrandenburg with Woggersin and is a beautiful gravel path that is still easy to navigate and is lined with large pastures. From here you have a great view back to Neubrandenburg and towards Trollenhagen Airport. Near the Datze stream there is also a rest area with tables and a half-open shelter that invites you to linger.
