Rastede Castle Park

Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig acquired the former monastery property in 1777, had the palace built in the classical style as a country house and in 1784 commissioned the garden architect C.F. Bosse, son of the court gardener in Wolfenbüttel, with the creation of an English garden.
Peter Friedrich Ludwig, born in Eutin in 1755, started after an 8-year educational trip on which he studied the art and philosophy of antiquity, on a trip to Europe with 91 travel stops, including to Wörlitz and England, where he explored the first landscape gardens. As early as 1778 he made his own designs for the 10 hectare park and the park equipment, including the Temple of Venus, built as a tea house in 1783. The castle served as the summer residence of the Oldenburg dukes and grand dukes. Successor Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August expanded the park to include Ellernteich and Hirschpark around 1843. Today the palace garden is 330 hectares in size.

Rastede Palace Park

Highlight • Forest

Today the park serves as a recreational area for countless walkers every day, as well as an attractive running route for joggers and Nordic walkers. In addition to the castle, striking places are the deer gate at the southern end of the park and the large tournament field in the north with the adjacent Ellernteich. The tournament venue in particular is also the venue for various renowned major events such as the vintage car race “Vintage Race Days”, the medieval festival “Spectaculum”, the “Rasteder Musiktage” with guests from all over the world, the equestrian event “Oldenburg State Tournament” and the “International Grass track racing for motorcycles.

The municipality of Rastede has been working on a concept for the future design and use of this park, which is unique in the northwest, since 2017. As a basis for this, the existing situation was recorded in 2018 and a current area representation was developed.

The area of the Gellener Torfmöörte covers approx. 120 ha. It used to belong to the 6000 ha Ipweger Moor, which was cultivated from 1900 onwards. The low moor with remaining high moor areas is characterized by moor grassland, ponds, peat cuts, forest and moor heaths. The area is known for its abundance of dragonfly species and swamp calla, which displays large white bracts from May to July. A moor nature trail offers a small tour of the area. Friends of the bird world can visit the Gellener Torfmöörte u. a. Experience tree pipits, stonechats and various species of warblers.

Rastede Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle was formerly the residence of the Counts and Grand Dukes of the House of Oldenburg. Even today, the castle is still family-owned and therefore not open to the public. However, you can enjoy the English-style parkland surrounding the castle.
