Salt Museum Bad Sülze

Highlight • Historical Site

Bad Sülze is a small, traditional health resort based on brine and moor. In the salt museum, the history of salt production (until 1907) is told and the development of the spa system is presented. Bad Sülze is also known as Dahlienstadt.

A graduation tower was built here as early as 1620. A graduation tower is a plant for salt extraction. It consists of a wooden frame that is filled with bundles of brushwood (mainly black thorn). The salinity in the water is increased by passing brine through the brushwood, whereby water evaporates naturally. In 1944 the last graduation tower was badly damaged by lightning. Finally it was demolished in 1970. A new graduation tower was built in the garden of the Salt Museum to show how it works.

Sanatorium Sol-Moor Bath Bad Sülze

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1822 the first brine cures were administered in Sülze and in 1824 the institutional spa business was started with the Grand Ducal Soolbadeanstalt (Kurhaus). Salt production was discontinued in 1907 due to inefficiency and the last load of salt was solemnly driven out of the city. During this time, Sülze continued to gain importance as a brine and moor bath. In 1927 the city was recognized as a health resort and was allowed to call itself Bad Sülze. In 1993 the new median clinic was opened and the old spa clinic closed.
