Description
If you are looking for a high-reward, low-effort hike with some of Oahu's most iconic views, the Lanikai Pillbox No. 2 Viewpoint – Lanikai Pillbox 1 loop from Puʻuhalo is an excellent choice. This easy hiking route covers 1.8 miles (2.9 km) with 429 feet (131 metres) of elevation gain, and most people complete it in about 56 minutes. It is perfect for those who want spectacular coastal panoramas without committing to a full day on the trail.
What to expect on Lanikai Pillbox No. 2 Viewpoint – Lanikai Pillbox 1 loop from Puʻuhalo
The trail starts with a rapid ascent, often steep, where you might need to use your hands for some scrambling over loose dirt and rocks. While the path is generally well-defined, it is primarily a dirt track that can be dusty or, after rain, quite muddy and slippery. As you climb, the route opens up, offering expansive views of Oahu's windward side. You will see the iconic Mokulua Islands, the turquoise waters of Lanikai and Kailua Beaches, and the lush Koʻolau Mountain Range. The ridge itself has some steep cliff edges, so stay on the path. The route is largely exposed with almost no shade, making it hot and humid, especially at midday. Despite the initial steepness, the overall effort is manageable for most hikers with basic fitness, delivering impressive scenery for a relatively short climb.
Planning your visit
This is a very popular and well-trafficked trail, especially at sunrise. To avoid the biggest crowds and the midday heat, plan to start your hike early in the morning. Bring plenty of water, as the exposed ridge offers no shade, and wear proper footwear to handle the varied terrain. While the Puʻuhalo starting point is less common than others, the general conditions for the Lanikai Pillbox hike apply here.
