Marilyn Bell Park Boardwalk

Highlight • Trail

Marilyn Bell Park is part of a long chain of parks along the western waterfront and includes part of the Martin-Goodman/Waterfront Trail. The Park is named after Marilyn Bell, a local Toronto girl who was the first person to swim across Lake Ontario. She was only sixteen at the time and she made the 52 km swim in 20 hours and 59 minutes. The Park was dedicated to her on the 30th anniversary of her swim in 1984. Marilyn Bell park has a beautiful boardwalk along the lake shore, tennis courts, biking and walking trails and is a lovely spot for a picnic.

Toronto Inukshuk

Highlight • Monument

Standing 30 feet tall with a 15-foot arm span, the Toronto Inukshuk was built from about 50 tonnes of mountain rose granite by Inuit artist Kellypalik Qimirpik of Cape Dorset, Nunavut. Created in 2002 as a legacy project commemorating World Youth Day and the visit of Pope John Paul II, it’s one of the largest structures of its kind in North America. Sitting just west of Coronation Park in what’s now known as Toronto Inukshuk Park, it looks out across Lake Ontario and the harbour. There is a granite slab beside it that includes part of then-mayor Mel Lastman’s unveiling speech, describing the Inukshuk as an invitation to “become beacons of light and hope, striving for justice and peace in this world.”
