Binnendüne Waltersberge

Highlight • Natural Monument

The inland dune is about 36 meters high and from the vantage point you can observe rare species of birds (e.g. cuckoo, black kite, great spotted woodpecker and woodlark). In addition, the dune is one of the largest inland dunes in Brandenburg. The sand and open areas - some with pine trees - are very worth seeing.

Waltersberge inland dune viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

In front of you lies one of the largest inland dunes in Germany: the Waltersberge. At their highest point they tower over Lake Storkower at almost 33 meters. So you have a beautiful panoramic view of the region even without a viewing tower.

They were created at the end of the last ice age around 14,000 years ago. Fine-grained sand was blown out by the wind from the large valley sand areas that were still free of vegetation at the time and deposited on obstacles close to the ground. This is how the Storkow dunes were created on an area of 16 hectares.

The slopes of the Waltersberge were used as vineyards early on. In 1735, around 6.6 hectares of wine were grown, resulting in around 8 barrels of wine. With the increase in forestry use and long-distance trade, the vineyard gradually disappeared.

From 1906 to 1943/44 there was a sand-lime brick factory here. The sand required was mined from the former vineyard, parallel to Reichenwalder Straße. Around 75,000 cubic meters of sand were mined annually in the early days. The limestone came from Rüdersdorf by barge and the stones produced were transported to Berlin by water. The factory had its own shipping company with 3 steam tugs and 18 Finowmaß barges. The factory also had its own wire-drawing shop, which was converted into a sewing machine factory in 1929.

Only a small part of the area designated as a nature reserve in 1990 is free of trees. In these valuable open areas, dry and lichen grasslands have been preserved, as they probably characterized the area after the ice masses retreated. Numerous plants that have become rare grow on the southern slopes, such as the blue-green iridescent grass (Koeleria glauca), the catchfly (Silene otites) and the sand thyme (Thymus serpyllum).

The shore path at the Wolfswinkel meanders through the undergrowth on the edge of the reed zone of the Great Storkower See. Very nice!

Great Storkow Lake

Highlight • Lake

Once around the lake, a good 20km on foot. You can park well in Storkow or Wendisch Rietz and, if Corona leaves us, there are also some nice restaurants.

Boardwalk near Storkow

Highlight • Trail

At Storkow the trail leads for a short distance over a stick trestle. A very good gap closure. Then the picture changes and the path goes along the shore between private lots and banks. The "enter forbidden" signs grow like mushrooms from the ground. However, it is only a short distance and after passing through a holiday village, you come back to the forest.

Burg Storkow Visitor Center

Highlight • Castle

If you visit Storkow (Mark) Castle, you'll find the Visitor Center (BIZ) of the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park. In the exhibition, you can discover the natural and cultural history of the region on three levels – the tour begins with the Ice Age and continues to the present day. Historical illustrations and maps await you on the top floor, giving you an insight into the castle's origins. The event series "You and Your Garden in the Nature Park" is particularly exciting, where experienced instructors show you how to care for your garden, make medicinal herbal ointments, or learn more about the garden's animal inhabitants. The staff at the tourist information center have many tips for excursions and discovery tours for you – whether you're traveling alone, with friends, or with family. You can find more information and opening hours here: dahme-heideseen-naturpark.de/erleben-lernen/info-ausstellung/besucherzentrum-burg-storkow.

April 26, 2022,Storkow, Runde 01 über Wolfswinkel, Hirschluch und Binnendüne Waltersberge (LOS)
A very nice to run round with many highlights (and consequently many pictures 😊) led me from the city center of Storkow (parking lot among other things on the market free for 4 hours) to Wolfswinkel am Storkower See and to the evangelical youth education and meeting place Hirschluch. From there we went back to the city via the inland …

Very well signposted hiking trail to the inland dune, from there through a beautiful forest then over the Wolfswinkel first through the settlement. I turned right to get back into the forest, always left past the Storkower See at the CVJM site where the large tree houses face the beach. Then you have to cross the beach. There is a …

A very nice tour through the forests around Storkow. The inland dune is fantastic. On the bench at the top, the perfect resting place. A detour to the educational center is worthwhile. If you're lucky, you can get a hot drink from the coffee machine (€ coins required). Wolfswinkel with the swimming areas are very beautiful. The stick path is …
