Conscio

Highlight • Settlement

according to some, the toponym derives from the Latin consessus "meeting", "assembly", in reference to the place where the inhabitants of the vicus met[2]. Others consider it later, bringing it closer to the consilium (through the Venetian consejo) with which, in medieval times, the community council that managed the local territory was indicated [2]. A third hypothesis brings him closer to Conso, the Roman divinity linked to the rural world; in fact, Conscio was located on the border between the countryside of Altino and Treviso (the road that connected the two cities passed through here), in a centuriated and cultivated area [3].

However, the origins of human presence are much older, as evidenced by the discovery of a stone hammer dating back to the time of the Euganeans [2].

The first written mention is found in a document of 1221: it is the will of Giovanni de Bonio, consul of the municipality of Treviso who also left duobus mansis iacentibus Conseo to his sons. Subsequently, the town always appears associated with Casier in a single rule, a situation maintained until the fall of the Serenissima [2].

However, the importance of the town grew from the mid-fifteenth century as a destination for pilgrimages. On September 8, 1451, the Madonna miraculously appeared to the young Graziosa Tabarello, humble herd of swine with a crippled leg and arm. This gave the young woman not only health of body and mind, but also a prophetic spirit: she predicted the wars that the Venetians engaged in the following times and the fall of Constantinople by the Ottomans. The inhabitants built a capital on the site of the apparition, which still exists, and then a church (the current parish) dedicated to the Nativity of Mary [2].
