Fortifications of Neuf-Brisach

Highlight • Historical Site

Neuf-Brisach is a fortification built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, which remains almost completely intact to this day. Its builder was Prestre de Vauban, after whom the district of Freiburg was later named. The fortifications are arranged in a star shape and could be freely designed on the drawing board, as it was a completely new construction, which did not require consideration of any existing features. As a result, Neuf-Brisach also corresponds to the ideal type of a Baroque military town.

Colmar Gate

Highlight • Historical Site

Neuf Brisach has four city gates, each at a 90-degree angle to each other. Only two of the old city gates survived: the Belfort Gate and the Colmar Gate. This gate changed its function several times. Initially, it served as a bakery and kitchen for the army. Later, the Germans converted it into a police station and prison. The upper floor also served as a casino for the German garrison.

Place d'Armes, Neuf-Brisach

Highlight • Monument

The city is organized in a grid of 48 blocks. The Place d'Armes, located in the center, served as a training and parade ground for the military.

The most important military buildings still stand today. The fountain served as a water reservoir in case of fire and as a watering place for horses. The four fountains at the four corners of the square supplied the inhabitants with drinking water.
