Bisse du Trient

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

From the Col de la Forclaz, the easy family path leads through larch forests, before finally reaching the foot of the Trient glacier after 3km, where the bites are caught. This historic path, older than the aqueduct itself, was used from 1865 to 1893 to transport blocks of ice on railway tracks to the Col de la Forclaz, from where the blocks of ice were brought to Martigny by train once a week To enter France. The ice was used for cooling in the breweries of Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Remnants of the railway track and an old transport wagon can still be seen. At the back there is a snack stand, the Châlet du Glacier. The Bisse de Trento, built in 1895, irrigates the meadows and vineyards of Martigny-Combe. It is still in operation and is explained in more detail using an informative educational trail.
