Peninsula on the Havel

Highlight • Viewpoint

A small, artificially created peninsula that separates a small bay south of Paretz from the Havel River. It offers a rather beautiful view of the Havel all the way to the Ketzin ferry. However, from a small bathing area halfway along the peninsula, the path to the tip is sometimes disastrous.

Bench with a view of the Havel

Highlight • Viewpoint

Whoever built this bench in this spot deserves a medal. A fantastic view and plenty of peace and quiet.

Paretz Palace

Highlight • Castle

Queen Luise and her family regularly spent the summer months in Paretz Palace and Park. They turned their backs on courtly life in Berlin for a few months a year and enjoyed the peaceful and almost bourgeois life in the country. The complex was built with high aesthetic standards: the palace and park were intended to be a royal country seat and a prime example of Prussian rural architecture.

You can see for yourself how extraordinarily successful the implementation of the plans is when you visit the castle and the park. You can find the opening hours and further information here: spsg.de/schloesser-gaerten/objekt/schloss-park-paretz.

Paretz Village Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The origins of the Paretz village church (choir) date back to around 1200. However, it only gained importance through its early classicist remodeling in 1797/98. The initiative for this came from the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm III, who had the village completely renovated at the same time as the castle was remodeled.
The plans and ideas for the remodeling of the church came from David Gilly, Martin Friedrich Rabe and the artistically gifted court marshal of the Crown Prince, Valentin von Massow.
The church was probably the first Prussian village church to be built in the neo-Gothic style. It has been remodeled many times, and in 2010 the interior of the church was also reconstructed to its original state.

Paretz Historic Ice Cellar

Highlight • Historical Site

The historically restored ice cellar is over 200 years old.
Here you can see original tools, such as ice saws, ice axes, and ice picks,
which were once used in the laborious harvesting of ice from the Havel River.
