Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

"Lüneburg Heath" nature reserve
License plate: NSG LÜ 002

The area includes larger areas of the Lower Saxon Geest between Buchholz and Soltau with a landscape characterized by extensive heath areas, moors, clear heath streams and near-natural deciduous forests as well as coniferous forests and is unique in its nature.

In particular in the area of a terminal moraine range, the most well-known of which is the Wilseder Berg, extensive dwarf shrub and juniper heaths, scattered species-rich mat grass lawns, have developed through traditional heath farming and have been preserved through maintenance measures, which today bear witness to the image of what used to be the predominant part of the Geest-encompassing heathland.

Characteristic for the appearance of this landscape, which is important not only for culture but also for a large number of species, are the areas with common heather, which are divided into large areas by juniper stands and show a small-scale and dynamic location mosaic. On inland dunes there are transitions to dry grassland with bent and silver grass. In groundwater-affected, partly boggy depressions, damp heaths with bell heather can be found, in which the inflorescences of the endangered bog lily set yellow color accents. In places there are transitions to the typical raised bog vegetation, which also occurs to a greater extent in the Pietzmoor south-east of Schneverdingen.

Bee fence in the Lüneburg Heath

Highlight • Structure

This was never a Heidschnucke stable. Such structures are called bee fences in the Lüneburg Heath.

Wilsede Village

Highlight • Settlement

Only come with wide tires - racing bikes will sink in the sand here. The cobblestone tracks in the few places on the edge where cars are allowed are also not for untrained bottoms. The views over the heathland and the scent of heather and heather sheep are unique.

Wilsede Village

Highlight • Settlement

The picturesque heath village of Wilsede is closed to motor vehicles and can only be reached on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. There are several old farms here and you can learn a lot about life in the Lüneburg Heath in the “Dat Ole Hus” museum. There are several inns where you can eat and drink.

This section is particularly suitable for mountain bikes, as there are many uneven paths and lots of loose sand, which pose a real challenge for trekking bikes. The heather that blooms in season is beautiful, but cycling quickly becomes a challenge and a disaster if you don't ride a mountain bike.
At weekends, there is hardly anything to do, as the paths are heavily frequented by pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages. It is almost impossible to get through without constant interruptions.

If you want to go on a relaxed bike ride, look at alternative routes.

Sylvester Lake

Highlight • Lake

The lake was formed when the subsoil was compacted by heavy military machinery after the Second World War. Today the lake lies harmoniously in the Osterheide and has never dried up, although it only feeds on rainwater.

Heather fields in Lüneburg Heath Nature Park

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

When the heather blooms, it looks beautiful.
When it doesn't bloom, everything turns brown.

The paths are often loose sand. Not for everyone.
