Amenano Fountain

Highlight • Monument

The fountain, built in 1867 by Neapolitan master Tito Angelini of Carrara marble, depicts the Amenano river as a young man holding a cornucopia from which water flows into a basin with a convex rim. The water overflowing from this tank creates a cascade effect that gives the feeling of a film.

La Pescheria Fish Market, Catania

Highlight • Structure

The fish market is open every day (except Sunday) in the morning until about 1:30 pm and is well worth a visit. You'll find not only fresh fish, but also vegetables and all kinds of groceries. There are also many small shops and restaurants. Some of the arcades are decorated with colorful umbrellas forming a canopy – quite lovely.

Historic Center of Catania

Highlight • Historical Site

The historic center of Catania forms the old core of the urban area. Its urban layout dates back to the 18th century and was built in the period following the Val di Noto earthquake of 1693, which completely destroyed the previous settlements of the Sicilian city.
In the current administrative subdivision of the municipal area, the historic center corresponds to the I Municipio.

Monument to Vincenzo Bellini

Highlight • Monument

The monument was built by the sculptor Giulio Monteverde on behalf of the municipality of Catania and was inaugurated in September 1882. It was probably unclear for a long time where exactly the statue should be placed. Some wanted to place it in front of the Massimo Bellini Theater, then under construction, others on the site of the Elephant Fountain in Piazza Duomo. Eventually the proposal to erect the statue in Stesicoro Square prevailed. The statue seems to be in an almost "strategic" position: Vincenzo Bellini appears to be looking straight at the saint during the celebrations for the city's patron saint (Sant'Agata). The composer is said to have been very devoted to the saint during his youth.
