The Via Ellenica del Cammino Materano is one of the most evocative variants of the route, crossing breathtaking landscapes and historical sites. Passing through the Gravina di Laterza, it offers an extraordinary immersion in wild nature, between deep canyons and imposing rock walls, habitat of birds of prey and protected fauna. This stretch connects the territories of Magna Graecia, rich in history and culture, up to Matera, capital of the Sassi. Ideal for hikers looking for an authentic experience between uncontaminated nature and ancient traditions.

Gravina di Laterza is an impressive karst gorge located in Puglia, among the largest and most spectacular in Europe, with a length of over 12 km and a depth of over 200 meters. It was formed millions of years ago through the erosion of water in the limestone rocks, creating a unique landscape of steep walls and caves. From a naturalistic point of view, it hosts a rich biodiversity: rare species of flora and fauna find refuge here, including birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture and the golden eagle. It is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, ideal for geological explorations and birdwatching.

In the photo one of the most suggestive points of the path n.3 of the Oasi Lipu Gravina di Laterza.
Excursion on the edge of the ravine about 5.5 km long (round trip about 11 km), it is a marked path, path n.3 of the Oasi Lipu Gravina di Laterza, which almost entirely also falls within the via Ellenica del "The Materan Way". The route is truly evocative and offers fairy-tale scenarios, even just in terms of landscape. The site is of notable naturalistic interest, here keeping silence is a must both to fully enjoy the beauty of the place and not to disturb the wildlife. As already mentioned, in fact, not only are we located within a Lipu Oasis, but also within the "Terra delle Gravine" Regional Natural Park and the ZSC/SPA "Area delle Gravine": let us always remember that Nature always respected: let's be silent, respect flora and fauna.
This splendid canyon, 12 km long, almost 200 m deep and with an average width of about 400 m, represents a real treasure trove of biodiversity. In fact, here you can observe birds of considerable faunal interest such as the short-toed eagle, black stork, peregrine falcon, lanner falcon, Egyptian vulture, black kite, red kite and many others. Between the end of summer and the beginning of the season it is also possible to observe the beautiful Apulian bellflower. The Oasis is very rich in various fauna and flora species.
Before the entrance to path no. 3 there is the Lipu Visitor Center, where it will be possible to find information. The Visitor Center is open from Thursday to Sunday. For information, the numbers of the Lipu Oasis can be contacted: 339.3311947 - 320.3898712
