Idyll not far from the industrial area. Can be easily combined with a tour to Eichbaumsee.

Julius Rose Shipyard

Highlight • Structure

The heart of the shipyard is the ship dock. Accessible from land via a small bridge, it floats on the water and is 90 meters long and a good 14 meters wide. It is surrounded by sheet metal walls. The dock is flanked by piers on the right and left, and workboats, transport ships and houseboats bob in the water in a row, waiting to be rebuilt, repaired and cleaned.

Highlight (Segment) • River

At the piers are a bit confused and yet orderly the most diverse boats. Some are for leisure, others seem to be waiting to be revived. Unfortunately, the jetties are not open to the public.

The barrage on Billwerder Bay connects the Hamburg district of Rothenburgsort with the Elbe island Kaltehofe and is the second largest in Germany after the Eider barrage. The facility has been protecting the city from storm surges since 1965 and has served many Hamburgers as a place for a wide range of leisure activities.

In 2002 the Billwerder Bucht barrage was renovated and increased. The 145 meter long barrage has been located 8.20 meters above sea level since then and thus offers more protection against floods.

The Billwerder Bay is an ecologically valuable body of water and is used not only as an inland port, but also as a sports boat port. The diverse and large abundance of fish in the bay is mainly due to the changing water levels and attracts many anglers here. The Billwerder Bay and the barrage above it are also ideal for cyclists or runners. You will find first-class conditions for driving and running over flat terrain, which also offers great views of the water.

The 1943 firestorm

Rothenburgsort had its darkest hour in July 1943: Allied bombs almost completely wiped out the industrial district, which was important for the war, in a single night. Thousands of residents were killed in the firestorm. Today, a memorial commemorates the night that was erected on the 60th anniversary of the firestorm.

The monument, conceived by the artist Volker Lang, consists of a scaled-down terrace house, the typical development of the workers' quarters in the district. Inside the house there are reports of contemporary witnesses and fragments of literary texts.
