Mesen

Highlight • Settlement

1,040 inhabitants and 358 hectares: Mesen is officially the smallest town in Belgium. The place was once an important business location: in the 11th and 12th centuries, all cloth merchants from Lille, Ypres, Bruges and Torhout came here for the annual market.

St. Nicholas Church with its striking dome dates back to those golden years. The entire building was damaged during the First World War and only partially rebuilt in 1928. Only the tower is a reminder of what the church must have looked like in the past.

Want to keep track? Then climb the tower. 37 meters above the ground you have a wonderful panoramic view over the hills of the Heuvelland to Lille.

Spanbroekmolen Crater (Pool of Peace)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Spanbroekmolen crater, also known as the Pool of Peace, is an impressive mine crater in Wijtschate. This crater was formed on June 7, 1917, during the Second Battle of Messines, when British troops detonated 19 underground mines. The explosion created a crater 27 meters deep and 129 meters in diameter. After nearly 100 years of erosion, the crater is now a peaceful pool 12 meters deep and 76 meters in diameter.

Kemmelberg

Highlight • Historical Site

Frans Monument 'Den Engel'
The memorial column on the summit of the Kemmelberg is one of the most important French monuments in the Westhoek. It commemorates the many French soldiers who fought here in April 1918 during the Battle of the Kemmelberg.
The memorial, also known colloquially as ‘Den Engel’, is a 17-meter-high column made of white cement. On the pedestal in front of the column stands the statue of the goddess of victory, Nikè, in Greek attire, with her wings spread against the sides of the column. In each hand, she holds a laurel wreath. The Greek goddess gazes with a mournful look at the mass grave and battlefield below. The sides of the obelisk list the names of the French units deployed here. This column was unveiled on September 18, 1932, in the presence of French generals Lacapelle and Pétain. Around 1970, a lightning strike destroyed the laurel-adorned French helmet on its summit.
