The metric system was introduced in the German Reich in 1871. In the course of this, the old, quite different ways of counting the length of the Rhine were replaced. Until then, it had been counted in miles of different lengths (Baden miles, Prussian miles, French miles). The Rhine kilometer count started in Basel and went up to Rotterdam. This count lasted until the late 1930s in the 20th century and was replaced in 1939 by today's kilometer.
