St. John's Church, Malchow

Highlight • Religious Site

The Malchow town church only reached its present location with its new construction under master builder Georg Daniel in the years 1870 to 1873. Unstable ground conditions and frequent destruction of its predecessor buildings by town fires (1697 great fire on the island) had made a relocation from the island, near the present-day town hall, necessary. The rectory is still located there. The financing of the new building could largely be covered by donations. Pastor Ferdinand Stolzenburg (1840-1886) was particularly instrumental, even managing to win over Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. as a patron, and is commemorated in the interior of the church with a portrait.
