Hoisdorfer Teiche Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Hoisdorf ponds are an ensemble of six individual ponds and their riparian zones are protected. The Hoisdorf ponds are located in the southeastern area of the municipality of Hoisdorf. In the west and north they are bordered by the Moorweg/Achtern Diek street and the grounds of the Lichtensee youth home conference center. The Jungfernstieg runs to the east and the village street with the historic village center runs to the southeast.
There is a 4 km long hiking trail around the ponds through beautiful nature, which I can happily recommend.
Unfortunately, you can't see much of the ponds themselves on the way, you can only catch a glimpse from a distance, but the nature reserve around them is very beautiful and also suitable for a short Sunday afternoon walk. Lots of nature and only a few people out and about, even on Sunday.

Hoisdorf War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

There is a boulder on a base made of field stones, in which an iron cross and the numbers 1914 - 1918 are carved at the top. A black plate is embedded underneath on which the names of 21 war victims can be found in the chronological order of their date of death. After the Second World War, the monument was expanded to include two small field stones.

1914 – 1918

Field stone on the left:
Wanderer, bow your head in awe of death and bravery

Field stone on the right:
In memory of the victims of the war
1939 - 1945

Village Square and Pond Hoisdorf

Highlight • Settlement

The village square is the center of Hoisdorf to this day. A map from the 18th century shows Hoisdorf as an anger village with more than 20 farmsteads that are arranged around the elongated village square. Even then, a pond belonged to the village square. It served to water the cattle and as a fire extinguishing pond. The wealthier farmers had their farms right on the village square. One of them was the farmer's bailiff, who mediated between the villagers and the landlord.

Other buildings were added in the 19th century. For example the school house, the village jug, a hoe shop and the fire department's syringe house. And Hoisdorf continued to grow. By 1939, around 800 people were already living here.

With the Second World War, bombed-out Hamburg families and refugees were drawn to Hoisdorf. New settlement areas were created in the Hoisdorf district to the northwest of the village center. The population tripled.

Agriculture is still the defining element of the village. That is why it is present in the Hoisdorf coat of arms, which shows a plow, a linden tree and a cogwheel. The gear symbolizes industry and commerce in recent times. Modern occupations that secure the Hoisdorfers a livelihood.

On the large lawn by the village pond, the peace oak stands together with lime trees, willows and chestnuts. The old village green today has a park-like character, inviting you to stroll and linger. There is also the maypole and the memorial for the victims of both world wars.
