🌊 A park like no other! Created in 2012, the Calanques National Park is a natural gem nestled between Marseille, Cassis, and La Ciotat. It's the only peri-urban park in Europe that encompasses land, sea, and island. A true Mediterranean chameleon! 🏞️

With its 8,500 hectares of land and 43,500 hectares of sea, it's home to exceptional biodiversity: nearly 1,000 plant species, 140 protected species, and spectacular seabeds. From the summit of Mount Carpiagne (646 m) to the Cassidaigne Canyon (-2,191 m), the park has it all!

But this treasure is fragile... Faced with pollution, fires, and mass tourism (2 to 3 million visitors per year), residents, elected officials, and associations have mobilized for over 12 years to protect it.

Today, the Park coordinates local stakeholders (state, municipalities, ONF, Conservatoire du littoral, etc.) to preserve, welcome, raise awareness, and promote sustainable development, both on land and at sea. 💚

⁉️Did you know?
Before its creation on April 18, 2012, the Calanques National Park already included six listed sites:

- November 29, 1934, for the Gardiole national forest,
- July 31, 1936, for the En-Vau and Port-Pin calanques,
- August 29, 1975, for the Marseille and Cassis Calanques massif,
- December 27, 1976, the Maritime Public Domain corresponding to the Calanques massif site,
- April 4, 1989, Cap Canaille, the Bec de l'Aigle, their surroundings, and the Corresponding maritime public domain,
- since 2003, the Riou Archipelago, classified as a national biological reserve.
- The National Park also houses three listed historical monuments, including the Cosquer, Fig Tree, Fox, and Tripe Caves, a registered historical monument, and a remarkable garden: the Mugel Park.

Former parking lot. Starting point for many circular routes. Attention, if you want to go here despite the closure, you should consider that this path is also the only access to the forester's house. A couple of particularly smart ones have parked here and were pretty excited about the parking tickets :-)

🥾 Turn off for the walking loop leading to Port Pin cove!
Walking Loop: Trou souffleur and Port Pin Beach

🔓 Secure your bike (illustrative photo) and walk 5 to 10 minutes to the cove!

🌲 Port-Pin: a fragile jewel to be preserved!

🙏 Please take the right steps to preserve this treasure and ensure everyone's peace and quiet!

Between Port-Miou and En-Vau, Port-Pin cove captivates with its beauty and easy access.

⛵ From the fishing port to a movie set
In the past, fishermen (the "pescadous") would land here and relax under the pine trees – hence its name.

🎡 In the 1960s and 1970s, the cove was home to a very popular open-air café. People even drove down there! Relics from that era are still visible at the far end of the beach.

🎬 In 1970, it appeared on screen in Borsalino, starring Delon and Belmondo, in the middle of a Marseille showdown.

🥾 The Blue Trail and its viewpoints
From Port-Pin, a blue-marked trail runs along the cliffs towards En-Vau.
🌄 It leads to magnificent viewpoints overlooking the sea and the pine trees, perfect for a contemplative break. Developed in 2007, it pays homage to the spirit of the place.

🛡️ A forgotten military past
During World War II, Port-Pin was a strategic area of the German defensive wall (the Südwall).
A battery is still visible above the beach. At the time, the cove was patrolled, ready to repel a landing.

🌿 Port-Pin is a natural treasure to be discovered... and preserved.

"In the evening, after the setting sun has transformed the horizon into a line of fire, the sea into a desert of sand, and one by one the stars have come to watch over us, we will return home enriched with memories that cannot be bought: smelling the salt as before, experiencing the fullness of our living flesh, tanned by the sea winds and baked in the sun, subject to the play of our muscles, while our minds still wander there—so close, yet so far—in this world apart between Marseille and Cassis."
Gaston Rébuffat

The first cove that we discover when leaving Cassis is called Port Miou. It offers beautiful views of Cap Canaille. These are these high orange-colored cliffs that overlook the city.

Bestouan Beach

Highlight • Beach

Small pebble beach, near the harbor and with services. Very popular. Those who want more solitude must walk a bit further into the Calanques.

September 15, 2021,Plage d'En Vau – Aussichtspunkt Runde von Cassis
At Grte (ruins before the descent to Plage de Port Pin; altitude quota 40m) we parked and locked our bikes. Past the Plage de Port Pin we continued to descend to the Plage d'En Veau. The descent is marked with "difícile", but is at most difficulty T4. We wanted to take the short cut to the NE for the ascent …

The round is very nice. Cycling is not permitted in the national park. I photographed the sign on the way back. I was made aware of this. But walking is fine...nice views and beautiful trails in between.
