View of Chew Valley from Wells Road

Highlight • Viewpoint

Nice views for sure, but this in a decidedly unfriendly road to find yourself on at rush hour and/or in the dark. I’ll go out of my way to find an alternative route back into Bristol unless it’s really quiet.

View of Bristol from Dundry Hill

Highlight • Viewpoint

Once you've slogged it up it's well worth it!

Ashton Avenue Bridge

Highlight • Monument

Opened in 1906 as a double decked swing bridge for road and rail traffic.

The bridge is now used for cyclists, pedestrians and Metrobus.

Ashton Court Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant new bit of cyclepath across Ashton Court from the university buildings to the wide gravel track up to the gate at the southern end. Very wide and easy gravel, although can get busy with both cyclists, walkers and dogs so take it easy.

Look out for the parallel little singletrack in the trees if that's more your bag.

13.5 km

Check the closing time displayed ( 30m into the park) as you enter as these change with the season due to daylight.

Providence Lane Climb

Highlight • Climb

Save some energy for this one - and don’t be fooled by the false summit halfway up!

Hobbs Lane

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very useful bike lane alternative to the A38 and Barrow Street rat run. But...Summer = overgrown and nettles. Winter = muddy and slippery. Take particular care as you approach the end of the lane heading north - as it gets a bit steeper, and slippy.

Chew Valley Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

The fifth-largest man-made lake in the UK, Chew Valley Lake is a vast reservoir providing drinking water for Bristol and the surrounding area. The lake, opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956, covers an area of 1,200 acres (4.9 km2).

Thanks to the indigenous and migrant birds that flock to the lake throughout the year, the lake is a national centre for birdwatching.

June 15, 2025,Bristol then round chew valley lake
Found some friends were nearby so backtracked and had ice cream instead of my full loop. Brutal climb on the way back, but then freewheeled all the way back to Bristol. Zoomzoom!
