Gatehouse at Arundel Castle

Highlight • Monument

Set in magnificent gardens, high on a hill, Arundel Castle commands the landscape with breathtaking views over the South Downs and the River Arun. Looming high above the town, it has been the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for nearly 1,000 years.

View of Arundel Castle

Highlight • Castle

Riding through Arundel town you'll be treated to spectacular views of Arundel Castle, which is set in magnificent gardens on a hill, looming high above the town like some giant sentinel.

There has been a castle here for 1,000 years and and if you have time it's well worth exploring the grounds and well-preserved interior. From further along the route you may be able to see its turrets poking through the mist – it really looks like something out of a fairytale!

Arundel Park Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Arundel Park is long descent coming after a mild uphill on London road, so at first, it is pleasant. Remember this is a state road with little or no light during the night and road is not the smoothest, so you have to take care of being on the side. The cars come speeding as you do and that can be dangerous even though the road is wide.

My 28mm front wheel hit an uneven area and began wobbling so much I had to push the brakes as hard to control it. It is also hard to indicate if you are going left towards Arundel, making the road twice as dangerous as oncoming vehicles cant guess your intentions. Take extra care going down this hill!!
