Cinder Track: Burniston to Ravenscar

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

More of the same traffic-free, cinder track greatness that's ideal for 'cross bikes, gravel bikes or family rides!

View from Common Cliff

Highlight • Natural Monument

Just to the east of the cycle track is Common Cliff, barely a few minutes ride south of the village of Ravenscar. The cliff offers captivating views to the north along the coast to Robin Hood's Bay.

A brief pedal further along the Cliff to the east, there's Ravenscar Radar Station, which was used during World War II - you might want to check that out.

The village was served by Ravenscar railway station between 1885 and 1965. The former railway line has now been turned into the Cinder Track. At the turn of the 20th century, plans were made to turn the village of Ravenscar into a holiday resort to rival nearby Scarborough. Roads were laid out; some houses were built, and sewers were laid. Because of the long trek to its rocky beach, Ravenscar never achieved popularity, and the development was left unfinished, a town with sewers and streets but no houses.

The Cinder Track extends from Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough along the coastline, almost completely traffic-free for 21.5 miles (34.6 km).

Running along the path that used to be home to the Whitby to Scarborough railway line until 1965, this now is a cracking place to explore for cyclists, runners and hikers alike.

Take extra care when busiest at the weekends at high season for families and dogs.

Robin Hood's Bay Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling. Robin Hood’s Bay is reputed to have a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. It was a hub during the late 18th century, as smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast.

Today, it's a busy tourist hub in summer and start of the coast-to-coast walking path. The origin of the village’s name is uncertain, but it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village.

When taking a detour into the village, be aware that you will have to negotiate a 31% incline on the way back.

A very nice track, suitable for gravel bikes but maybe more comfortable on MTB. It's a very long hill but be cautious and do not road test a new bike you have built on it all the way down and then immediately snap your chain and realise you haven't brought any spare links or the tool. If you do do that, it's a long 8 mile push back to the top, but very scenic.
