Sandsend Beach

Highlight • Beach

Just a short distance from Whitby, Sandsend has a completely different feel and is a place of calm compared to the hustle and bustle of Yorkshire's other resorts south along the coast from here.

There are a couple of cafes, Tides and Sandside Cafe and public toilets a short way south east from the Sandside Cafe on the A174.

Sandsend Road

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Sandsend Road, leading out from Whitby and north towards Teeside is a lovely coastal road with views across the sea to the east and of Sandsend itself here as it begins to drop down to the coast.

This is a great road to take either into or out of Whitby. From high up you can appreciate the vastness of the North Sea and people watch those promenading along the seafront.

To the east you can see to Whitby and to the north-west across to the cliffs of Sandsend Ness.

Cinder Track Gateway

Highlight • Trail

We just cycled this track from Whitby to Robin Hood Bay (and back).

The track is a lovely ride, away from traffic and close to nature. The surface is a little muddy under the trees at Whitby but the gravel is now fine for all the family the rest of the way.

Look out for either the bike shop/cafe en route, or the little drink/cake stop with an honesty box. Thoroughly recommended.

Whitby Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Whitby is a traditional seaside town that is dearly loved by young and old alike. With a glorious golden beach, quirky cobbled streets that wind enticingly through old taverns and pubs — frequented by sailors and smugglers in times gone by — and a bustling harbour overlooked by the striking Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, it is an intriguing and beautiful place. With connections to Captain Cook and Dracula, too, Whitby truly is a place unlike any other.

Sandsend Beach

Highlight • Beach

Here you can enjoy the beautiful, large beach away from larger towns. There are a few cafés on the coastal road where you can take a break and strengthen yourself.
