View of Ellerkin Scar

Highlight • Natural Monument

Ellerkin Scar is a limestone rock formation that is popular with walkers and climbers. From the top you can enjoy great views over Wensleydale.

It is am impressive sight looking north from the road over Newbiggin Pasture.

Running parallel to the busier A684 this rolling road starts in Wensley & follows the valley for miles. Much the better option for cyclists as the traffic is light and views are great.

The amazing view of rolling road heading West to Sedbergh from Hawes. A true rollercoaster.

Semer Water Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

A hidden gem. One of Yorkshires finest road climbs hidden in a quiet and relatively unknown backwater. Ridden from the east starting at the bridge it starts brutally steep. Genuine 25% up to a right left in Countersett. Its then calm at 8% for a while up to the main event hairpins at 22%.
Beautiful road in and fabulous descent back down into Wensleydale.
Another of those "if Simon Warren knew about this it would have been in the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs"

Oxnop Scar Climb (25% Gradient)

Highlight • Viewpoint

After the first 200m, you get a respite & a decision to make. Carry straight on up Moor Road to Oxnop Scar & Muker. This is a tough climb.

Alternatively take the right up a ramp. The top of this little section has a spectacular view of Wensleydale. If you want a photo, now is a good time, since the toughest section is just around the corner...

Shortly after there is a fork in the road. Go left. It is steeper than anything so far and drags on a bit. Once conquered, there are a series of tough ramps, but increasingly less severe. Eventually the top arrives.

About 200m after the summit, the road bears left. The view here is incredible, Swaledale, rocks, sheep & the thread of tarmac disappearing sinuously.

The descent is technical and gets twisty & narrow near the bottom. Take care! Oncoming vehicles are rare, but will occupy 90% of the road if they appear.

Yes, I live here.

View of Wensleydale

Highlight • Natural Monument

At a metal gate in the wall to your left give access to pasture. Pop in & take in the stunning panorama of Wensleydale. Leyburn and Penhill to the far left. Waldendale, Raydale & Askrigg village, then right to Bainbridge & the Roman Road up to Wether Fell. Further right is the village of Burtersett & Hawes. Fabulous!
