Burnthouse Bank Descent to Osmotherley

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

This is a one-mile descent towards the village of Osmotherley down from Osmotherley Moor. Or up towards it, of course, in which case you've got some work to do! The forested slopes of Big Wood to the south of here look particularly picturesque. It's a really fun and beautiful road to ride!

This is a great access point to jump onto the Cleveland Way from Cleveland Road. There is a car park a few hundred metres away to ditch the vehicle. This also happens to be an exceptional viewing point to enjoy the scenes of North York Moors

This is the point where you can turn right for the longer Fort route (blue) and Paradise trail (red), or turn sharp left to head back to the visitor centre and car park on the shorter blue loop. It's well worth pausing here a while because the views to the east are absolutely incredible.

If you're following bridleways rather than the marked cycle routes, there's a handy fingerpost here with directions.

The final section of the Paradise and Fort trails from Sutton Bank leads you through Cliff Plantation. It's a twisty single track trail, though not technical and well surfaced, leading right to the car park.

A North York Moors National Park visitor centre, cafe and information centre. Start your walk here and pick up one of the local walking trails maps or use the facilities and plan your own adventure. Entry to the centre is free and anything you buy from the shop or cafe helps support the work the national park authority do.

High on Whitestone Cliff, on part of the classic Cleveland Way trail, you are rewarded with spectacular views over Gormire Lake and miles beyond. If you are exploring Garbutt Wood Nature Reserve and the lake from below, it's worth a stroll to the cliff tops for the views. You won’t regret it.

Sutton Bank Mountain Bike Trails

Highlight • MTB Park

A mix of gentle trail centre and bridleways track makes for a bit of a different riding experience out across parts of the Cleveland way. About halfway round is an excellent bit of downhill, but also be aware the climb back up shortly after is extremely steep and will get your legs and lungs burning!
