Devil's Staircase Climb (Abergwesyn)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Deep in the wilderness lies a hill that needs no introduction, the Devil’s Staircase, and it’s the opportunity to tackle this beast that will lure many to sign up for the 300km of the Dragon Devil. Be warned though, this road can devour the freshest of legs, never mind those with 190 kilometres of riding in them.

Leaving Abergwesyn, rising gently through the isolation you reach a couple of bridges in the rocky valley then ahead the road disappears into the trees past a weathered sign warning of the upcoming perils.

Straight away the narrow surface pitches up to 25% as you grind your way into the eerie conifers to reach a left hand bend. The road levels a little here, allowing you to catch your breath, but then it’s straight into the next incredibly tough stretch, which ends with a sharp almost unrideable 30% right-hand bend.

After this it backs off a bit, but there’s still a good distance of very tough climbing before you can finally relax.

Confronting the Devil's Staircase northbound from near Llyn Brianne reservoir is tackling one of Wales's most infamous climbs, famed for its savage steepness and remote beauty. Prepare for an immediate, brutal ascent as the narrow single-track road rears up, averaging a punishing 10-13% but hitting steep ramps well over 20%, reportedly reaching 25-30%. Feel the wild exposure of the Cambrian Mountains, with stunningly remote views as your reward for conquering this truly devilish challenge.

Llyn Brianne Dam

Highlight • Viewpoint

Stunning spot and worth the extra few hundred metres detour if the plan is otherwise to simply ride around the reservoir.

You'll find brilliant gravel and forestry roads on one side of the reservoir and slick, smooth black tarmac on the other, the choice is yours.

View of Cynghordy Viaduct

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

On the road from Llanerchindda to Cynghordy in the distance looms this fantastic Viaduct. It was totally unexpected find on my ride. The road takes you under the Viaduct, where there are various plaques.
The Cynghordy viaduct, with eighteen arches built in sandstone and lined with brick, is 259 m (850 ft) long on a gentle curve, rising to a height of 31 m (102 ft) above the valley. It is a fine sight.
Still in use today as part of the Central Wales Line.

February 1, 2025,Ride to Llyn Brianne Reservoir via Devils Staircase 😈 - Stunning 😍
It was a cold start and never getting above 4 degrees, but meaning a super clear day, with winter sun on my back and ice, lots of ice 🧊 on the roads. The weather shows off the absolutely stunning landscape 😍. A ride to test the ankle, a lot of climbing 12 named, and plenty of lumps in between. I …
