Skeldale House, Askrigg

Highlight • Settlement

The actual village name is Askrigg. It is a name of Norse origin which translates as Ash Ridge. Slightly elevated above the valley floor, Askrigg sits below the imposing Ellerkin Scar. The hill is even more impressive if you try to cycle up Moor Road (next to the Crown Inn) either to Muker (2.3km at 10%) or Low Row via Fleak Moss (3.0km at 10.5%).

An interesting irish bridge over Newbiggin Beck here. The beck can sometimes be dry in the summer. There are great views of Nappa Scar from here and of Wensleydale in general.

A gloriously preserved building from the medieval times, Nappa Hall was constructed by the Metcalfe family, cousins of the Cliffords of Skipton. A popular rest stop for nobility travelling across the Dales, Nappa Hall has slept Lady Anne Clifford, Sir Walter Raleigh, James I and Mary Queen of Scots, amongst others.

Mill Gill Force

Highlight • River

A fine little waterfall, in fact one of the finest in Wensleydale. Mill Gill Force can be visited easily from picturesque Askrigg and combined with a stroll to Whitfield Gill Force just a little further up stream.
