Bolton Priory Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

A really popular place to visit right on the river with huge estate grounds around the 12th century monastery ruins for beautiful walks and family days out.

From Skipton there's a beautiful, quiet backroad route to come here through Halton East.

If you do pay to drive in, there's a fantastic kids/family cycle zone next to one of the car parks. It has little signposts and it's a wonderfully safe place for really little kids to get to grips with riding a bike. You can bring your own picnic too, so all in all it's a great day out.

Barden Tower

Highlight • Castle

Built by Henry Clifford in the late 15th century, Barden Tower was one of six hunting lodges used by the Clifford family. Under the instruction of Lady Anne, the tower was renovated in the 1650s, but fell into disuse by the 1800s. It is an important waymarker on the Lady Anne's Way long-distance trail between Skipton and Penrith.

Set in the heart of Wharfdale in Appletreewick, The Craven Arms pub is a great place for a pitstop. The Craven Arms has been serving guests real ales and delicious pub meals since the 16th century.

Today, the building still breathes history, with many authentic features such as oak trusswork. The Craven Arms is open everyday from 12pm until 11pm. Food is served from 12pm until 8.30pm. You can find out more information on their website: craven-cruckbarn.co.uk/opening.html

If you're not familiar with this back road I'd strongly recommend it! A narrow single lane from Bolton Abbey through to Ilkley, beautiful scenery and great winding roads all the way down.

Tittybottle park, formerly Manor Parade Gardens, is the smallest park in Otley. A slim stretch of greenery alongside the river Wharfe, with plenty seating to watch the ducks and boats go by, ideally with some fish and chips.

The park got became known as Titttybottle park after its popularity with mother's who would be found seated, feeding their babies.
