Birk Head Lane and Howldale Lane

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

It's a gorgeously pleasant spin on these two lanes (connected into one road) between Lower Askew and Appleton-le-Moors. Quite unlikely you will get many, if any, cars on your way, and the views of Birk Head and towards Appleton are green, lovely and peaceful. Enjoy the experience!

The pretty village of Cropton, south of Cropton Forest, is a fantastic place to stop. There are a few places to have food and drink here, a rather lovely green with an old water pump and pleasant seats provided.

Of interest might be Cropton Bank, just north of the village, where there are remains of an old motte and bailey from the times of the Norman invasion.

Cawthorn Roman Camps

Highlight • Natural Monument

If you follow the signpost on Bradley Road here, to the north, within 5 minutes, you will reach Cawthorn Roman Camps. The site includes a well-preserved earthwork and a section of medieval trackway called Porter Gate thrown in for good measure. There is also a viewing platform with superb views to be enjoyed from a bench.

Newbridge Quarry

Highlight • Structure

Some dramatic views of this limestone quarry just north of Pickering. At one time, a rail track went to the quarry, and limestone used to be removed from here by rail each week. It's quieter here these days.

St Laurence's Church, Kirby Misperton

Highlight • Historical Site

This large church dominates the village of Kirby Misperton (Kirby is from Old Norse, meaning "church village"). The church has been in the village since the 9th century. Apparently, this was one of very few stone churches in Yorkshire at that time when almost all other churches were built of wood. Of course, as you can imagine, over the centuries, the church has undergone tremendous changes: it was completely rebuilt in the 15th century, and then lots of changes were made to it in the 19th century.

It is a wonderful place to stop on your cycle while passing this interesting village.

Barugh Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

There are some nice flat roads around here in the Vale of Pickering which provide some welcome respite to the hilly North York Moors and Howardian Hills. This gives rise to some nice open skies and farmland views. Fields of rapeseed in late spring create a gorgeous blanket of colour.
