Riverside Valley Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

Nice flat multi-use track. Tarmac for the 1st half then hard parked gravel for the rest. Suitable for road bikes, at least I ride it with my 28mm tyres without any issues.

Pentewan Quay

Highlight • Settlement

Pentewan harbour is entirely cut off from the sea after the clay export industry here dried up in favour of nearby Charlestown and Par. It was also used for pilchard fishing which is now similarly inactive.

There is a post office and shops plus a large caravan park where holiday makers can make the most of the wide sand on Pentewan beach.

Pentewan Beach and Village

Highlight • Beach

Lovely seaside village to stop off at for refreshments during your ride. Great coffee and cakes available from Little Bay Cafe or if you fancy a beer there's the Ship Inn with its beer garden. Personally I love a Flat White on the bench looking out over the beach listening to the sea 💝

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Highlight • Historical Site

The Lost Gardens of Heligan make for a mysterious and romantic visit. The gardens lay forgotten for decades after the outbreak of WWI until 1990, when they were re-discovered behind a door.

Heligan was built in the 13th century and was purchased by the Tremayne family in the 16th century. The gardens were developed from 1766 until 1914 with the construction of a walled garden, melon yard, bee boles and more.

Following the outbreak of WWI, the house was used as a hospital for officers, from 1939 until 1945 it housed American troops before being converted into flats and sold in the 1970s.

The gradens were restored to their former glory during the 1990s. You can easily spend a day wandering the 200 acres of gardens, which are open from 10am until 6pm. Tickets for adults cost £15. You can find more information, here: heligan.com

Pentewan Railway Trail

Highlight • Trail

Between London Apprentice and Pentewan runs the disused Pentewan Railway Line. It is now a flat traffic free trail of around 4.5km in one direction so makes the perfect place to run at a consistent pace.

It also makes a great way to link St Austell with the coast path for a longer run. As it is so flat it is either a great warm up or warm down after a hilly coast run.
