Hartside Summit Viewpoint

Highlight • Summit

The highest point of the Pennine Cycleway and the ultimate achievement for cyclists coming from the south or north.

At the top stands a Sustrans Millennium milepost, providing a perfect vantage to take in the distant Lakeland fells.

Once, a café graced this summit, renowned for its famous home baking. Unfortunately, in around 2017, it met its demise in a blaze.

The descent in both directions offers a thrilling ride on excellent tarmac, with a road that's not overly steep.

Great Dun Fell Access Road

Take it easy on the brakes, there's loose gravel in places. I reached 42 mph on way down

Great Dun Fell Radar Station

Highlight • Viewpoint

Standing at 2,782 feet (848 m) tall, Great Dun Fell affords spectacular views over the melancholy moors. It's the second-highest mountain in the Pennines, with its taller neighbour, Cross Fell, just 2 miles (3.2 km) away. The summit is home to the Civil Aviation Authority’s air traffic control radar. The summit domes are visible for 40 miles (60 km) around.

Great Dun Fell to Garrigill Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Bridleway section, slow going with some pushing but trending down hill. Wild and open. Good place for a wild camp. Lovely bit of river too before joining gravel road to Garrigill. It's the bit on the GBDuro film where Lachlan Morton is completely fed up...

Garrigill Village Green

Highlight • Settlement

The Cumbrian village of Garrigill is situated on the banks and close to the source of the River South Tyne.

The village is centred around a lovely green, framed with charming stone-built houses and buildings.

It's location is notable for being on both the Pennine Way (the oldest of the UK's National Trails) and the Sea to Sea Cycle Route (C2C) England's popular long-distance cycle route linking the east and west coast.

Garrigill Village and South Tynedale Valley Road

Highlight (Segment) • Settlement

Stunning quiet valley. Fab old pub at Garrigill (George and Dragon). Then a challenging climb over to Nenthead.
