From the station you can access three public footpaths that cross Goathland or Mill Moors, much of the terrain is grassy and easy-going. Great track runs southeast from behind the station, which after crossing Cow Wath Bank road, takes you to the picturesque Brock Beck stepping stones.

Robin Hood's Bay Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling. Robin Hood’s Bay is reputed to have a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. It was a hub during the late 18th century, as smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast.

Today, it's a busy tourist hub in summer and start of the coast-to-coast walking path. The origin of the village’s name is uncertain, but it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village.

When taking a detour into the village, be aware that you will have to negotiate a 31% incline on the way back.

Larpool Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

Larpool Viaduct, also known as the Esk Valley Viaduct, is a 13-arch brick viaduct, originally built to carry the Scarborough & Whitby Railway over the River Esk. It's now the route of the Cinder Track.

Cinder Track Gateway

Highlight • Trail

We just cycled this track from Whitby to Robin Hood Bay (and back).

The track is a lovely ride, away from traffic and close to nature. The surface is a little muddy under the trees at Whitby but the gravel is now fine for all the family the rest of the way.

Look out for either the bike shop/cafe en route, or the little drink/cake stop with an honesty box. Thoroughly recommended.

Grosmont Steam Locomotive

Highlight • Historical Site

Grosmont is a village with a railway station on the Esk Valley Line, and served by heritage services operated by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Grosmont is home to the NYMR's engine shed, and several railway-related buildings and structures are listed, including the 'Station Tavern' public house, the Post Office, and the former horse tramway tunnel, now a pedestrian route.
