Loweswater

Highlight • Viewpoint

A calm lake hidden in a forested valley, Loweswater is a beautiful stretch of water which is often overlooked by Lake District visitors. Owned by the National Trust, Loweswater is the only lake in the Lake District that drains towards the center of Lakeland. Keep a look out for rare red squirrels who have made their home amongst the coniferous surrounding the peaceful waters.

Buttermere Village

Highlight • Viewpoint

Buttermere is an achingly beautiful village in the western Lake District. Situated between Crummock Water and Buttermere and sitting in the shadow of many superb fells, the permutations for walks are many and varied. It caters for hikers very well, with two pubs, a couple of cafes, a youth hostel, a campsite and holiday cottages.

Its beauty is such that, despite its remote location, it is immensely popular with families, walkers and hikers. The roads around the village are notoriously narrow and bendy and jams are common. Try to avoid peak times and public holidays to get the most out of the place.

Derwentwater

Highlight • Lake

One of the most scenic corners of the Lake District, Derwentwater, also known as Keswick's Lake, is known for its changing moody landscapes: from dramatic southerly gales to calm early mornings. Surrounded by rolling fells and woodland, the lake is popular with visitors. With several lake side marinas and islands to explore, there is plenty to do. The lake is approximately 3 miles (4.8km) long, 1 mile (1.6km) wide and 22 meters (72 feet) deep.

The main road from Keswick to Cockermouth used to take you through the village of Portinscale via a two arched stone bridge known as the Long Bridge. There were plans to replace it in 1911 but these plans were opposed and it was not until it was damaged by floods in 1954 that it was replaced initially by a temporary metal structure. When the road was built to bypass the village in the 1960's a new road bridge was built further downstream and the current suspension bridge was built for pedestrians only allowing people to access Portinscale across the fields known as the Howrahs.
