ALWAYS CHECK TIDE TIMES BEFORE CROSSING THE HOLY ISLAND CAUSEWAY AND GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO RIDE BACK.

I am informed that the emergency tower on the causeway to Holy Island is referred to locally as 'the idiot tower.' Apparently in the summer season the tower lives up to its name about once a month. Try to avoid being a tower occupant, having an expensive rescue or endangering your safety by noting the tide times and following the crossing guidance given on the Northumberland County Council website:
holyislandcrossingtimes.northumberland.gov.uk

The Belvue Guesthouse also has great information for crossing the causeway and for walking the pilgrims route across the sand. For the causeway crossing see here:

Please follow the guidance.

1. Need to check on the tide time to enable able you to get across the causeway (and back!). Tide information can be found here oranorthumberland.gov.uk/www2/holyisland/holyisland.asp
2. Don't forget that you will be travelling through salt puddles as you cross - good idea to wash your chain when you can!
3. Lindisfarne castle is well worth a visit for the views and settings. If you like Lutyens as an architect this is a must - he was the architect for the renovation and extension of the castle.

Holy Island (Lindisfarne)

Highlight • Historical Site

Visit Lindisfarne Castle (National Trust) and Lindisfarne Priory (English Heritage). Holy Island is also the starting point of both St Oswald's Way and St Cuthbert's Way. Do not miss a visit to Pilgrim's coffee in the village, open from 9:30 - 17:00 every day and try their excellent cakes and sandwiches before setting off on the Pilgrim's Way at low tide.
